Components Of A Car Tire
Vehicles, even airplanes, have a set of tires. More than being a rubber that is molded to fit in a wheel, the design of a car tire is a bit complicated, consisting of different materials to support the weight of an automobile. Contrary to popular beliefs, a tire is not really
round. What it makes round is the pressure of air inside, the weight of the load and a flat spot on the
bottom where the tire meets the road. This flat spot is called the contact patch. It helps the tire have
more space on the ground so that the square inch area touching the ground is higher.
A car tire is made up of various components. It is made up different layers that keeps it last long and not
easy to wear. Although the rubber compound that tires are made of is a combination of many different substances,
the usual components of a tire are the following:
1. Bead Bundle - is a high-strength steel cable coated with rubber
that gives the tire the strength it needs to stay seated on the wheel rim.
2. Body - is made up
of different fabrics commonly polyester. The plies are also coated with rubber to help them
bond with the other components.
3. Belts - are also made of steel that is used to reinforce the
area under the tread. It also helps the tire stay flat so that it makes the best contact with the road.
4. Cap
Plies - are an extra layer or two of polyester fabric to help hold everything in place, not all
tire have this cap plies.
5. Sidewall - helps increase the lateral stability.
6. Tread - is the outer layer of a tire. It is made up of many different kinds of natural and synthetic
rubbers.
